What is Neem Cake?
Neem cake is the residue left after extracting oil from neem seeds. It is a powerful organic soil amendment that acts as both a slow-release fertiliser and a natural pest repellent, making it a must-have for organic gardeners.
Benefits of Neem Cake
- Natural pest control – repels soil-borne pests, nematodes and insects
- Slow-release fertiliser – provides nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium over time
- Improves soil health – encourages beneficial microbial activity
- Fungal protection – helps prevent fungal diseases in soil
- 100% organic – safe for edible plants and the environment
How to Use Neem Cake
As a Soil Amendment
- Mix 50–100g of neem cake per pot (depending on pot size)
- Blend into the top 2–3 inches of soil
- Water thoroughly after application
- Reapply every 45–60 days
As a Pest Deterrent
- Sprinkle neem cake around the base of plants
- Mix into potting soil before planting to prevent root-knot nematodes
Which Plants Benefit Most?
- Vegetables: tomatoes, brinjal, chillies, leafy greens
- Flowering plants: roses, marigolds, hibiscus
- Fruit trees and ornamental plants
Important Notes
- Use non-edible neem cake (not food-grade) for soil application
- Avoid over-application – too much can temporarily affect soil pH
- Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture
